If you need help paying your electric utility bill, you may qualify for state or federal fuel assistance. Be sure to check with the Department of Social Services to see if you qualify for energy assistance. The Energy and Weatherization Assistance Program is designed to help lower income households overcome the high cost of energy. The program is operated at the local level by community action agencies or other local agencies since 1976. It can provide free home weatherization to anyone who qualifies. Eligibility is based on household income. Priority is given to the elderly and handicapped individuals and to families with small children. There is no cost for weatherization assistance; however, funds are limited so you may be placed on a waiting list. Renters as well as homeowners are eligible if the landlord gives written permission for the work to be done. A contribution from the landlord may be requested.
For complete qualification and application information, contact your local county welfare or community/citizen’s action council listed below.
